Culture and Mint Tea

CULTURE
The Moroccan people are predominantly Muslim. The culture and religion of these people makes them very friendly and hospitable. Most tourists cannot avoid an invitation to visit a local family at least to share a mint tea and probably a meal.

Traditionally the area is a very safe place and special tourist police keep a watchful eye.

ZAGORA
Just over one kilometre from Amzerou village is the small city of Zagora.

The people of Zagora are a mixture of those originally born in the South, Berber people coming from the mountainous areas of Morocco, tall black people from surrounding black African states, and descendants from the Arabic peninsula who brought Islam into the country through history.

Zagora is a favourite among tourists who come to this area to visit the Sahara Dessert. Travellers and local people meet as the sun goes down to enjoy the famous Moroccan mint tea known as Berber whisky, aromatic French style coffee and fresh local fruit juices and snacks in the dozens of café’s on the terraces and sandy sidewalks of Zagora.

SHOPPING
In Zagora you will find many shops full of wonderful souvenirs of Moroccan crafts together with the famous Moroccan carpets. There are two specialist areas in the town of Zagora for carpets and exclusive Moroccan antiquities and jewellery
Twice week there is a huge local market (Souk) selling all kinds of household items, food, camels and donkeys.
